Have you ever come across a John HANKINSON baptised about 1811 or perhaps sometime after? (Parent John HANKINSON TAILOR).  I seem to be at a stumbling block and find it hard to get back from here. Any information would be very useful.

Do you Know?

A LITTLE EXPLANATION

An aid to our understanding part of the Hundred within the County Palatine of Lancaster (the County Shire of Lancaster) known more commonly as Lancashire.

People born around Warrington which had two council areas, Warrington Town Council and Warrington Urban Council, especially those born in Woolston, Rixton, Hollinfare (Hollins Green) and Glazebrook would answer the question of "Where are you from?"  with 'Warrington' because outsiders would probably recognize Warrington but not the small village names.

Another problem can arise if an outsider did not know Warrington, the questioner would be further enlightened with 'Burtonwood near Liverpool' now everyone has heard of Liverpool!

The above is typical of North West England.   Hollins Green is approximately 6 miles East of Warrington along the A57 road towards Manchester. Now you see how easy it was for a forbear to be listed as Warrington when no doubt they were of Woolston or Rixton which are even closer to Warrington.  The people in Hollins Green (Hollinfare) which is in the parish of Rixton with Glazebrook!  to this day associate themselves with Warrington which has been in Cheshire since 1974 whereas before it was in Lancashire.

A research problem is when a person from Hollins Green moved further eastwards.
A 10-minute walk along a nicely paved footpath for a quarter mile towards Manchester along the A57 Trunk Road to the River Glaze and you are in Cadishead which is adjoined to Irlam and it had plentiful supply of higher paid work and not far from the rest of the family.

Once in Cadishead or Irlam you then associate with Manchester some 9 miles eastwards, this being because the name Barton which was much closer to Manchester but the Registration Parish of Cadishead, Irlam, Barton, Peel Green, Patricroft, Eccles et al was Barton Upon Irwell.

Now Eccles is adjoined to Salford and Salford is adjoined to Manchester and these latter places left Lancashire in 1974 to become part of the new County of Greater Manchester.

Hence east Lancashire then ceased to exist, with Liverpool becoming the County of Merseyside, Warrington area becoming part of Cheshire and the Manchester region westwards becoming Greater Manchester and South Manchester like Stockport left Lancashire to become Cheshire, these boundary changes were a political move to strengthen the political controlling party.  This backfired on them so the newly created County Councils where disbanded but the area's where not given back their original county status, but given Metropolitan status such as Salford, Trafford, Thames etc.

The place names mentioned above are very much in a straight line along the A57 road traveling eastwards from Warrington to Manchester.  Burtonwood being west of Warrington midway towards Liverpool following the same road.

I was born & bred in Irlam with strong family ties to Cadishead and Hollins Green, although my ties to Irlam are now very weak, but still a little stronger in Cadishead & Hollins Green.

So don't be misled, if and when I am asked, where do I originate (whilst in South of England & now in East Midlands of England and previously in South West Wales) my answer  would always be Manchester Lancashire England.

In fact many people would comment, "You're from Lancashire & probably Manchester"!

So I am listed as Manchester because people outside the area just haven't heard of these smaller towns and villages, and the Registration Districts tended to take the name of a smaller town in the centre of the areas.

I hope that the above will be of assistance in your HANKINSON of Lancashire research.

A Little Extra

Dumplington Church (RC) is very close to the Manchester Ship Canal swing bridge at Patricroft - an area of Eccles which is within the Barton upon Irwell Registry District of Lancaster.
My birth patch, Barton I. is made up of Eccles, Swinton, Monton, Worsley, Winton, Patricroft, Dumplington, Peel Green, Barton, Jennys Green, Higher Irlam, Irlam, Lower Irlam, Cadishead, all of which now come under Salford. With the exception of Dumplington which now comes under Trafford, based in Sale. In fact right up to Hollins Green (Hollinfare) the very hotspot for Lancashire HANKINSON's.
